Community News
Our 2024 Concordia Lutheran College Art Show is being held from Wednesday 30 October to Friday 1 November. Our students are very excited to show off their amazing works of art. With the new Art Show format, all students and families are welcome to attend this free community event during the opening hours across the three days.
The gallery contains artworks created by Concordia students from Kindy to Year 12. Every Junior College student has selected one piece of artwork to exhibit that has been created in Visual Art lessons.
There will be over 500 pieces of artwork on display including painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramic art, photography and the crowd favourite skateboard deck art display.
Feature Artist, Alice Rigby, will be reviewing the artworks and a select few artists will receive a personalised Commendation Award in recognition of their talent.
We look forward to showcasing the students' skill and creativity and hope to see you there!
Cows Create Careers - Great News!
Congratulations to the Year 5 students from WSC Emily, Ellie, Imke and Grace, who have achieved the title of Junior Regional Champions in the Cows Create Careers Program and have won an impressive $250 for the college! Earlier this term, these talented students created a fantastic 60-second TV commercial promoting the dairy industry. Their impressive work has earned them a spot as finalists in the national competition and a chance to win a further $2000. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and creativity!

Page Turner Packs
Page Turner Packs – Pick Up Yours Today!
We all know that literacy is vital for education and for lifelong learning, but did you also know that reading for pleasure can benefit for our mental and physical health? The act of reading for pleasure can help with anxiety, create a sense of connection, and can help to lower your heart rate and relax your body.
We know that encouraging our young people to read can be an uphill battle. Often, we are competing with friends, social media and computer games in trying to convince our young people to pick up a book. Recent research (Gagan-Spriggs, 2023) shows that one influencing factor in persuading young people to read is seeing people that they look up to read and take an interest in reading. This could be a parent. Older sibling, teacher or coach. Young people enjoy also the social aspects of reading, which we can see play out in the popularity of trends such as #booktok (book reviews on TikTok).
Taking all of this into account, we are introducing ‘Page Turner Packs!’ These are mini book clubs in a box and come with multiple copies of a book, discussion cards and activities related to the book that they whole family can enjoy together. You could even recruit extended family to join in! The idea being that you all read the same book and have conversations as a family and enjoy the activities together.
The books are aimed at years 4-9 but can be enjoyed by any age group.
Our Page Turner Packs can be borrowed from any campus- please get in touch with me (Heidi.edwards@concordia.qld.edu) to borrow your box
Books:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Tommy Bell Bushranger boy: Shoot Out at the Rock (by local author Jane Smith)

JC Christmas for the Bush
It has become a tradition in our Junior College to support the amazing work of Care Outreach by contributing to their Christmas For The Bush program.
Care Outreach has been supporting outback families for over 30 years. Christmas for the Bush is an annual event, delivering Christmas hampers and gifts to struggling families in rural and remote regions. Farming families work incredibly hard. Loss of income, isolation and depression are some of the issues these families deal with on a daily basis. Care Outreach works to bring encouragement, support and hope to farming families in need.
In Term 4, the Junior College is again supporting Care Outreach with their Christmas for the Bush appeal. You can help by donating...
- Non-perishable food and Christmas treats
- Toys and family gifts
- Toiletries
- Pre-paid visa cards
Donation baskets have been placed in every classroom. 100% goes to our farmers! For specific needs, please visit Care Outreach and click on the 'Christmas for the Bush' tab.
Care Outreach are excited to have our support again this year, and we look forward to assisting their Christmas for the Bush campaign. Thank you for considering this worthwhile appeal.
Christmas for the Bush will conclude with a Junior College Chapel Service lead by our Year 1 students in the SSC Chapel on Friday 1 November at 9.30am. Everyone is invited to come along.

HSC Cans 4 Cash Collection - Student Council Sustainability Project
Last year the Hume Street Campus community brought in over 10,000 cans, bottles and poppers to be recycled to Containers for Change as part of the Year 3 and 4 Environmental Sustainability PBL unit. As a community, we raised over $1000 and was able to fund new soccer goals that students are able to enjoy each day.
This project was so successful last year so Student Council and the Environmental Captains would like to set a new sustainability goal for us all as a community. We would like to collect another 10,000 cans, bottles and poppers for 2024. This works out to $1000! With this money raised, we plan to buy $1000 worth of lunchtime activities to benefit every student in the school.
This money may go towards extra ezyrollers, more balls, STEM and library activities and different equipment for the playground. There is a big bin located outside the Year 3 classroom, home reader room and the kindy. Both eating areas will also have a bin especially for poppers. We encourage you to please recycle and bring in any spare cans, bottles and poppers to support this worthy cause.
There is a scheme number on the poster if parents would like to take this in directly to Containers for Change. Please see Mrs McManus if you have any questions about this. Thank you.
HSC Concordia's Got Talent - 5 & 6 November
We are excited to announce that our Year 6 Cultural Captain Lucas Rixon is organising, "Concordia's Got Talent"! This fun, informal event will take place during first break (10.45am-11.30am) and is all about celebrating the unique talents of our students. Whether it's singing, dancing, or showing off a hidden skill, it is a chance for students to enjoy themselves and share their abilities in a relaxed and supportive environment. We will invite all students to come along and cheer for their peers making it a memorable lunchtime filled with laughter and entertainment! Parents are also welcome.
Students have been invited to register their interest. They are able to do their act solo or with a group of friends. We aim for each item to be no longer than 2 minutes. When they register, they will need to let Lucas know if they need music and which song, and also if they need props, such as gym mats. We are looking forward to this very exciting event.

The Ponytail Project
The Ponytail Project isn’t just about losing your hair—it’s about gaining a sense of pride and purpose. It’s about standing in solidarity with the families and individuals who are battling cancer every day. For many of us, this fight is personal. Almost everyone knows someone close—a family member or a friend —who has been affected by cancer. It’s a disease that hits home for so many of us, and through this project, we have the chance to support those who are going through some of the toughest times in their lives.
This project is student-driven, which means we are leading the charge. By taking part, you’re joining a community of students committed to remembering those we’ve lost and supporting those still fighting. Every ponytail cut, every dollar raised, and every conversation sparked by this project makes a difference. It’s about showing that, as students, we can come together to create real, positive change in the world.
- Monday, 25 November
- Lunchtime
- Fundraising students will be shaving/donating their hair
- Hair spraying/colouring will be available as well
