The Week Ahead - Term 4, Week 2
Monday 14 October to Friday 18 October 2019
From the Head of College
Welcome back to the final term of 2019. I am looking forward to all of the end-of-year activities, and to those things that highlight and celebrate the many successes that we have had throughout the year. Please watch and ‘study’ the calendar for events that will interest you, and like last year, I would encourage you and your extended family to attend as many of these events as possible. See you there!
It is with both sadness and excitement that I let you know that Pastor Mark Blackwell has accepted an offer to become the Principal at Peace Lutheran School, Gatton. Pastor Mark has had a taste of the role in years gone by, and I take this opportunity to thank him for his work throughout our community, and to wish him and his family all of God’s blessings for the journey ahead.
Mrs Natalie Blackwell and their children will remain at Concordia and so our connection with Pastor Mark will continue into the future. I am sure that in the weeks ahead, there will be many occasions where we will be farewelling Pastor Mark. Every blessing and many thanks.
Mrs Juanetta Priest, Director of Hume Street Campus, will be taking leave from 7 November through until the end of the school year. On your behalf, I wish Mrs Priest well for the period of additional leave and we look forward to her return in the new school year.
In the final weeks of the Term 4, Pastor Mark Blackwell will be Acting Director of Hume Street Campus and I thank him for his willingness to bring his expertise to the role and reduce disruption at this important time of any school year.
Mr Adrian Wiles
Head of College
From the College Pastor
Thank You!
We are forever saying ‘thank you’. We thank the person at the shop who scans our items. Hopefully we say thank you to parents who make us lunch, wash our clothes and love us. We thank our children for washing dishes (!), helping around home and for various other things. We thank our teachers for the work they do and care they provide. We also thank our friends and colleagues when they do something kind and support us in various ways. Chances are that on most days (if not every day) we use the words, ‘thank you!’
In Luke 17:11-19, there are ten lepers. They would have been excluded from the community and lived as outcasts. It would have been a miserable life. Yet in an instant it all changed. Jesus healed the ten lepers. As the Son of God, he had the power to help and cleanse them. No longer were they ostracised; no longer did they have to suffer. Now they had been set free. You would expect that they all would have fallen at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. Yet, we are told that only one returned. A Samaritan returned and praised God and thanked Jesus. The other nine had forgotten to say, ‘thank you’.
It is easy to forget to thank God for the blessings we receive. It is easy to take things for granted. When we look at the list we see that we have many things to give thanks for. We give thanks to God for Jesus, for his death on the cross, for the Bible that speaks to us how precious and priceless we are to him, for our family and friends, our shelter, food and water, and for things like the beautiful sunrise, and the sound of rain. This day may we remember to thank all those people who support us. And at the end of the day, may we take a few moments to give thanks to God for those people and for the many other blessings and support he showers upon us day after day.

All Saints
November 1 is known as ‘All Saints’. On or around this day many Churches hold a service where they remember members of their congregations who have recently died. It is a service filled with many emotions as people feel the hurt and grief of losing a loved one, the joy of precious memories of that person, and also the hope that is given through the risen Lord, Jesus.
Each year at Stephen Street Campus we hold an All Saints service and give students and staff the opportunity to come forward and light a candle in memory of a loved one.
On Wednesday 30 October at 8.30am, the Stephen Street Campus staff and students will have an All Saints service during the usual Wednesday morning time of worship in the Concordia Chapel. If you would like to come forward and be part of the service and light a candle in memory of a loved one (whether they died recently or years ago) you are most welcome to join us.
God’s blessings.

Welcome to Term 4
Wow, how did we get to Term 4 already!! This term too is packed full of exciting learning and many exciting events beginning with a whole campus cooking activity today. Check out Facebook for photos and the Nude Food Challenges for details of these events.
Have you seen the amazing photos of the new playground or heard the excitement from your child? They have been having so much fun and have no idea how much benefit that are receiving from just playing. We will unpack this a little over the coming weeks.
Thank you so much to the Evan’s, our P&F who have supported our Learnscapes project and to yourselves for supporting all of our fundraising ventures over the past several years. We are planning to begin planting this area up soon and would like to hear from anyone who has knowledge of plants, trees and bushes. We are also organising a pop up picnic to celebrate this area with all families. More details to come about this in next week's edition of The Week Ahead.
On a personal note, I am very excited that in November, my daughter and granddaughter will be visiting us from England and I am going to take some Long Service Leave to be able to soak up being a grandma. In my absence, Pastor Mark will be based from Hume Street Campus to be able to assist in any way necessary.
I look forward to sharing in the many activities of this term with you all and celebrate the amazing community that we have.

Nude Food Day – Tuesday 22 October
This year we will be holding Nude Food Day at Warwick Street Campus on Tuesday 22 October.
Nude food is simply food that is not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging. The best type of nude food consists mainly of fresh food, so that it is healthy and nutritious as well as being environmentally friendly. Promoting nude food empowers students to make conscious choices about what they eat, and encourages them to think about their impact on the environment (and their health).
A large part of our school waste comes from food and drink packaging. That is a lot of needless rubbish! Quite a few students at Warwick Street Campus already have nude food lunches, so this is already encouraging!
On Nude Food Day we will also be providing each class with a Nude Food Platter to share at Morning Tea.
We look forward to everyone supporting this worthwhile event!

Overflowing with hope
Welcome back to Term 4. One of the things I enjoy most about working in a school is hearing the buzz on the first day as students and staff return from holidays and are catching up with each other. There are always plenty of smiles and laughter as the embellished stories are holiday adventures are told.
On Tuesday, Mrs Cook accompanied the Year 9 students up to Googa to start their four-week program. I dropped two of our boarders up after work and it was great to see the students settling into life at Googa. Dinner was cooking and the cabins had the buzz that comes along with the anticipation of what lies ahead. Mrs Cook and I will be heading up there after school on Monday so keep an eye on Facebook for some updates.
We are certainly living in interesting times. In speaking with or staff at the beginning of this term I started by sharing the following verse.
Romans 15:5-7,13
“5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
The notion of overflowing with hope was something that I wanted our staff to focus on this term as we continue the process of preparing our young people for their lives ahead.
It is easy, when looking at the head winds buffeting our national economy, the devastating impacts of droughts and fires, the global unrest both economically and politically, to lose hope. I firmly believe that there is a great deal to be learnt and gained from gong through the process of enduring and finding encouragement even in the face of great challenge.
As you would expect, planning is already well underway for all of our end of year celebrations. It has been a fantastic year so far and I am looking forward to sharing the joy of our successes as the year comes to an end.

RESET - Recycling, Education, Sustainability of the Environment Together
Students at Concordia who are passionate about caring for our world have created a group dedicated to advocating change, educating the community and putting into practice easy and sustainable changes to help our environment. We meet on a weekly basis to discuss the latest issues concerning our environment and what we can do to help.
Currently we have two initiatives in place - collecting bread tags and collecting cans and bottles for the 10 cent recycling program.
So far we have raised $45 in two weeks through students recycling bottles and cans into their house bins. We are looking into setting up an account at the recycling centre if you would like to contribute funds to our cause. All money will be donated to the Student Council to use for school projects.
At least 3kg of bread tags have been donated through collection points at student reception and around the school. These bread tags help provide wheel chairs for those less fortunate than ourselves in Africa. Please keep bringing them in. Thank you to those who have contributed already.
The first wider community initiative we would like to introduce is asking households to analyse their carbon footprint and look at ways they can reduce it. The following website allows you to calculate your footprint https://standfortrees.org/en/footprint. Please be aware there is a donation section attached to this site and we are not asking anyone to take part in this section in any way.
Look out for future tips and hints on how you can support the environment. If you have any ideas please forward them to me or ask your child to attend a RESET meeting and share.

Boarding
Boarding Update
Hello, and Welcome to our first Term 4 Boarding segment in the Week Ahead. We hope that the adults, as well as the children/boarders, enjoyed a great holiday !
I am not ashamed to say that we boarding staff enjoyed the break – and of course we feel refreshed to tackle the last term of this year. It was exciting to see the boarders return to Concordia this week. As well, I was impressed that most (all ?) were also happy to return.
I headed back to Cairns for a week to see my family (including the dog and cat).
While I was waiting at the Brisbane Airport I grabbed a copy of the Weekend Australian (September 21-22) – which I very rarely do – and inside was a magazine titled ‘Boarding Schools’.
Looking through the magazine, which was a combination of articles from schools and organisations from all around Australia, I highlighted a number of points, some of these being:
- “Second families for thousands of school students”
- “A little independence makes a strong start”
- “Respectful and caring, resilience and grit”
- “Lifelong connections”
- “Wellbeing in study, sport and growth”
- “How life’s lessons are learned by living in”
- “Personal growth”
And one of my favourites - “Resilience, confidence, personal organisation”.
Of course there were many, many more!
The above are our aims for Concordia boarding. If we had enough room above our boarding house doors, these would be the mission statements we would have listed there.
This is what us boarding staff work to instil every day into our boarders - so I suppose I better get back to it!
