The Week Ahead - Term 4, Week 3
Monday 21 October to Friday 25 October 2019
From the Head of College
Rugby is back at Concordia!
It was sensational to see our teams compete in the Toowoomba Rugby 7’s competition this week. This is the first time in many years that we have entered both boys and girls teams under the Concordia banner, and there was such a vibrant atmosphere as some 40 students took part in Round 1.
Some encouraging results were recorded, some wins and some losses with the highlight being the win over St Mary's by the Open Boys Team. Thank you to all involved, and in particular to Mrs Anderson, coaches, parents and students. These teams will now roll into the Touch Football competition in Term 1, 2020 and onto the AFL season.
Junior College Art
In visiting the Junior College this week, I could not help but be impressed by the student artwork that is on display. Some very talented students will continue to show their creativity in this area; culminating in the Junior College Art Showcase to be held at the Stephen Street Campus on Friday 1 November. Congratulations everyone and I look forward to chatting with you at this new exhibition.
Water Polo Achievements
Congratulations to all of our students who are making Darling Downs representative teams in many sports. It was exciting to see that we have a strong contingent of boys in the current Water Polo DD team, and we await details of the representative team for girls.
Training for Water Polo, and general Water Polo skills sessions have started and are held at the Concordia Aquatic Centre on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and we are looking forward to hosting a round robin competition against other local schools midway through this Term. Thank you to Ms Riehl and Ms Crichton for their efforts to lift the experiences for our students and for those interested in school aged Water Polo in the area.

All Saints
November 1 is known as ‘All Saints’. On or around this day many Churches hold a service where they remember members of their congregations who have recently died. It is a service filled with many emotions as people feel the hurt and grief of losing a loved one, the joy of precious memories of that person, and also the hope that is given through the risen Lord, Jesus.
Each year at Stephen Street Campus we hold an All Saints service and give students and staff the opportunity to come forward and light a candle in memory of a loved one.
On Wednesday 30 October at 8.30am, the Stephen Street Campus staff and students will have an All Saints service during the usual Wednesday morning time of worship in the Concordia Chapel. If you would like to come forward and be part of the service and light a candle in memory of a loved one (whether they died recently or years ago) you are most welcome to join us.
God’s blessings.

Nude Food Day – Tuesday 22 October
This year we will be holding Nude Food Day at Warwick Street Campus on Tuesday 22 October.
Nude food is simply food that is not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging. The best type of nude food consists mainly of fresh food, so that it is healthy and nutritious as well as being environmentally friendly. Promoting nude food empowers students to make conscious choices about what they eat, and encourages them to think about their impact on the environment (and their health).
A large part of our school waste comes from food and drink packaging. That is a lot of needless rubbish! Quite a few students at Warwick Street Campus already have nude food lunches, so this is already encouraging!
On Nude Food Day we will also be providing each class with a Nude Food Platter to share at Morning Tea.
We look forward to everyone supporting this worthwhile event!

Geography Excursion
On Friday 10 October, the Year 10,11 and 12 Geography classes took an excursion to areas in Toowoomba to collect primary data and information for our upcoming assessment. The day began with a tour of Cobb & Co Museum with an insightful administrator Tony Coonan.
We learnt about Toowoomba’s transport history and tips on how to create our transport system so that it could be as successful as Cobb & Co. We had the opportunity to ask questions about future possibilities of Toowoomba’s transport, to guide our idea processes for our assessment.
The session brought a greater understanding of how important every aspect of a transport system is to successfully connect a town or city. After the tour, we walked to Ruthven Street to complete a street survey of the stores/shops along the road. We then collected data of how many vehicles drove north on that street, over a 10-minute period in our traffic surveys.
The day ended with time in Grand Central, where we discussed our data and began to think of ideas for our own transport systems. The excursion was a day of exploration, data collecting and learning that will be beneficial towards completing our assignment.
Thanks to Mr Mathews and Mrs Jordaan for all their hard work to make this excursion possible.

When plans change!
Question: What do you do when you have planned a challenging outdoor walk, and it rains in Toowoomba?
Answer: You sing and dance because the rain has finally come, and then you go to the College gymnasium and have fun!
That is what we had to do last Saturday.
We had planned to walk Table Top Mountain, which is located at the bottom of the Toowoomba Range. But the rain came Friday night, and Saturday morning, making the walk too slippery.
So instead of the walk, on Saturday morning we headed off to the gym.
The Residential Tutors quickly got the equipment for badminton, basketball and table tennis ready. Then the action began! Those boarders not feeling so active had a place to sit and play card type games. Amazingly, by the time the activities had finished, out came the sun.
(For the record, the tutors reckoned they were the champions of the table tennis.)
